Which Paintball Marker is Right for You?

A paintball marker is basically a gun that shoots paintballs, which are made from soft capsules filled with paint. While marker is the most common term for this piece of equipment, you may also hear it called a paintball gun or paintgun. Markers work by using cartridges of CO2 and compressed air to propel the paintballs. There are different kinds of markers at a variety of prices. Budget models for beginners start out around $50 while professional and tournament grade markers can cost more than $1000.

When it comes to a paintball gun, the old saying 'you get what you pay for' often applies. Cheap paintball guns are often less durable than more expensive models because they're made from cheaper material. It goes without saying that a gun made from metal is going to usually last longer than one made from plastic. However, there are some new types of plastic out there that are extremely durable but often more expensive. Powering your marker is also something to think about. Many experts recommend markers that are powered by a CO2 tank instead of cartridges.

How the marker works is another thing to consider. Some of the most affordable types of markers are pump style. This means that you must load paintballs by pumping the marker before shooting. These types of markers are great for beginners and often quite accurate. Then, there's the semi-automatic type of marker. With these, all you have to do is pull the trigger to release paintballs. They're easier and faster to use than pump style markers, but also usually more expensive. Finally, there are electronic paintguns out there that offer various automated shooting modes.

Once you've established your price range and decided the type of marker you'd prefer, it's time to go shopping. It's important to choose a paintball marker that appeals to you visually and is comfortable to handle. Many beginners end up purchasing a marker kit, which includes not only the marker but other accessories like the tank, hopper and protective face mask. These value-priced kits are a great way to become acquainted with the sport of paintball without spending a lot of money. You'll also need paintballs. Make sure you select paintballs that fit your marker, because they come in a variety of calibers.
